What Is Beehiiv?

Beehiiv launched in 2021, founded by former Morning Brew employees who knew what a successful newsletter business looked like from the inside. It is a newsletter platform built specifically for growth and monetization  not general-purpose email marketing.

In three years Beehiiv has grown to power over 25,000 newsletters, including some of the fastest-growing publications in the creator economy. The platform’s core philosophy: give creators the tools to build an audience they own and monetize it without giving a percentage to the platform.

I have tested Beehiiv extensively alongside Kit, Substack, and MailerLite. Here is what I actually think.

Key Features

1. The Ad Network – Beehiiv’s Biggest Differentiator

Beehiiv has a built-in ad network that connects your newsletter with advertisers. You can accept sponsored placements directly within Beehiiv without finding advertisers yourself. This means you can earn money from your free subscribers through ad revenue – not just from paid subscriptions.

For a newsletter with 2,000 subscribers, realistic ad revenue is $50 to $150 per month. For a newsletter with 10,000 subscribers, $500 to $2,000 per month is achievable. This income is on top of whatever you earn from paid subscriptions or affiliate links.

2. Boosts – Getting Paid for New Subscribers

Beehiiv’s Boosts program lets other newsletters pay you to recommend their publication to your subscribers. When someone signs up for your newsletter, you can show them recommended newsletters – and you get paid per new subscriber you generate for those newsletters.

This is passive income from your existing audience with zero extra work. Early-stage newsletters with 500 to 2,000 subscribers can realistically earn $50 to $200 per month from Boosts alone.

3. The Free Plan – Genuinely Generous

Beehiiv’s Launch plan is free up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited email sends. This is more generous than Kit’s free plan at 1,000 subscribers and significantly more generous than Mailchimp’s January 2026 cut to 250 contacts.

The free plan includes a website builder, custom domain support, landing pages, and the recommendation network. For a creator just starting out, this is a complete newsletter infrastructure at zero cost.

4. The Writing Experience

Beehiiv’s editor is the best newsletter writing experience available. It feels like a premium writing app rather than a marketing tool. Clean formatting, good image handling, inline embeds, and a distraction-free interface.

If you have ever struggled to write consistently because your email platform felt like admin software, Beehiiv’s editor removes that friction.

5. Analytics

Beehiiv’s analytics are stronger than Kit’s on the newsletter-specific metrics that matter: open rates by segment, click rates per link, subscriber growth trends, and revenue attribution. The Scale plan adds advanced analytics including deliverability reporting and engagement scoring.

Where Beehiiv Falls Short

1. The Jump from Free to Paid

The gap between the free Launch plan and the paid Scale plan is significant. $49/month for 1,000 subscribers is more expensive than Kit Creator at $33/month at the same subscriber count. The monetization tools on Scale justify the premium – but only if you are actively monetizing.

2. Email Automations

Beehiiv’s automation capabilities are more limited than Kit’s. Complex multi-step subscriber journeys with conditional branching are harder to build on Beehiiv. For pure newsletter publishing this does not matter. For solopreneurs running complex email funnels alongside their newsletter, Kit is stronger.

3. Deliverability Reports

Some users have reported deliverability issues on Beehiiv – emails landing in promotional or spam folders. This appears to be more common on the free plan and with newer accounts. Paid plan users generally report strong deliverability. Worth monitoring in the first month.

Is Beehiiv Worth $49/Month?

Yes – if you are seriously building a newsletter as a primary content channel or business. The ad network alone can offset a significant portion of the $49/month cost at even modest subscriber counts.

If you are using email as a supporting channel for a content or product business rather than as the primary product, Kit is the better choice at a lower price point.
